Birmingham City Under-18s lost to Aston Villa in the Under-18 Premier League on Saturday.
Despite a piece of individual brilliance from Juran McKayle to equalise in the first half, Villa claimed all three points at the Knighthead Performance Centre.
Martyn Olorenshaw’s team were looking to get back to winning ways and replicate the same level of performance as the last home game which saw them beat Ipswich Town in dramatic fashion.
Blues started in the ascendancy when Michael Campbell drove down the right-wing and fired a low effort narrowly wide of the far post.
However, the visitors struck back and took the lead; Cole Ramsey’s flicked header found the bottom-right corner.
Kian McCusker had a chance to level as Olorenshaw’s side responded well. Campbell found the forward inside the penalty area and his strike tested Villa goalkeeper Rhys Oakley.
The away team had an opportunity of their own when Jack McGrath could not find the target with a low attempt.
Some intricate play from Blues then resulted in Aurelien Guernier striking from distance, but Oakley got down quickly to deny the attacker.
Blues continued to grow into the game and made their pressure count just before the half-hour mark. McKayle’s close control saw him weave his way into the penalty area and curl a precise finish into the far corner to deservedly equalise.
Villa retook the lead a few minutes later, captain Junior Wilson converted from close range following a free-kick.
The visitors extended their advantage when Clay Atkins was found at the far post and struck past Alfie Smith.
The 15-year-old goalkeeper prevented Villa from making matters worse, expertly denying Markie Meade after the striker was sent through one-on-one just before half-time.
Blues had a chance to reduce the deficit shortly after the interval when Isifu Jawara’s header forced a stop from Oakley.
Goals from Fletcher Boyd and Rio Hammond sealed the victory for Villa as Blues could not create any more clear-cut chances.
Olorenshaw’s Under-18s are back in Under-18 Premier League action on Saturday 25 April when they visit Brighton & Hove Albion at The Amex Elite Performance Centre, kick-off 11am.
