Birmingham City Women return to St. Andrew’s @ Knighthead Park this afternoon, as Amy Merricks’ side host Brighton & Hove Albion in their first home fixture of the 2026/27 Barclays Women’s Super League season.
WSL football returns to B9 following last season’s promotion, with Blues preparing to play in front of their home supporters for the first time since securing their place back in the top flight.
Merricks’ side opened their campaign away to reigning champions Manchester City last weekend, producing a competitive performance despite eventually falling to a 3-1 defeat at the Joie Stadium.
Océane Hurtré opened her account for the season late on, while several players made their first appearances for the Club and at WSL level.
Sunday now provides another opportunity for Blues to build on that opening-day performance and take another step forward against an established Brighton side.
RECENT FORM
Blues arrive back at St. Andrew’s @ Knighthead Park with plenty of positives to build on following last weekend’s trip to Manchester.
Merricks’ side frustrated the reigning champions during a goalless first half, competing throughout and showing the organisation and resilience required at WSL level.
Manchester City eventually found the breakthrough after the interval before Khadija Shaw struck twice, but Blues continued to compete until the final whistle and were rewarded when Hurtré found the net late on.
Sophie Baggaley also impressed on her competitive return to the Club, producing a number of important saves on her second Blues debut.
Speaking after the game, Merricks highlighted the performance as a platform for her side to build from as they continue to adapt to the demands of the division.
With the focus now firmly on Brighton, Blues will be looking to carry the positives from Manchester into their first home outing of the campaign.
THE OPPOSITION
Brighton & Hove Albion also arrive in the West Midlands searching for their first points of the season after beginning their campaign with a narrow 1-0 defeat against Arsenal.
Lisa Baum’s 10th-minute strike proved the difference at Broadfield Stadium, but Brighton remained in the contest throughout and produced an encouraging performance against one of the division’s leading sides.
The summer brought change on the south coast, with Arturo Ruiz appointed Head Coach shortly before the start of the new campaign following the departure of Dario Vidosic.
The Spaniard arrived with experience in Liga F and has spoken about building a side capable of adapting its approach, pressing aggressively and playing with intensity both with and without the ball.
There remains plenty of familiarity within the Brighton squad, with experienced WSL players including Fran Kirby, Caitlin Hayes and Maisie Symonds complemented by the likes of Kiko Seike and summer arrival Chiamaka Nnadozie.
Brighton showed their defensive resilience against Arsenal on the opening weekend and also carried a threat going forward, with Seike testing the visitors early on.
