We look ahead to today's lunchtime clash in the Sky Bet Championship at St. Andrew's @ Knighthead Park
BC1 4990
Birmingham City will be looking to return to winning ways when they host Wrexham this afternoon (12pm).
Chris Davies' side have won just one of their last eight games and are aiming to finish the campaign on a positive note with five games remaining.
They face a Wrexham side who are pushing for a place in the top six, with Phil Parkinson's men currently sitting just outside the play-off places.
The opposition
Wrexham’s fairytale rise continues to astound and with five games remaining the Welsh side are once again embroiled in a promotion shake-up.
Having been National League champions as recently as 2023, knocking on the door to the Premier League just three years later is a big achievement. Yet the ambitious North Wales outfit have stars in their eyes as well as in their boardroom.
After shadowing Blues up to the Championship last season, many might have expected the Red Dragons’ quest for further elevation to falter. It has done no such thing with manager Phil Parkinson’s side being behind only Coventry City, Ipswich Town and Southampton when it comes to goals scored. They savoured a seven-game unbeaten run from late October, enjoyed a four-game winning streak from Boxing Day and claimed notable successes over the division’s leading two and against Welsh rivals Swansea City at Stok Cae Ras.
Wrexham
Their play-off aspirations were dealt a blow in midweek though after a 5-1 home defeat to Southampton. Consequently, the Saints leapfrogged them into sixth spot in the table with time running out.
A frustrated Parkinson, who has overseen the club’s meteoric rise since 2021, is expecting a reaction from his side this afternoon after suffering their worst home loss since 2011.
He said: “It was a tough night and we haven’t had many nights like that since I’ve been here. There are five games to go, 15 points to play for. We’ve left a lot of really good teams in our wake this season, who’d love to be in our position.
“It’s back to the drawing board tomorrow when we come in as a staff, because we’ve got to go to St. Andrew’s on Sunday and put a back-to-basics performance in to give us a chance in the football game. We’ve got to make sure that we batten down the hatches as a group and come out with a response.”
Recent action
Prior to today's game, Blues suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat on the road against Ipswich Town at Portman Road.
Wrexham, meanwhile, arrive on the back of a 5-1 home defeat against Southampton last Tuesday night.
Pre-match thoughts
Birmingham City manager Chris Davies: "I feel a determination from them (the players). They know that we haven't been at our best consistently, we've had too many ups and downs in terms of our performance levels.
"We've got to try and pull it together now and get some consistency into these last few games."
Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson: "There's five games to go, 15 points to play for. We’ve left a lot of really good teams in our wake this season, who'd love to be in our position.
